If you’ve been watching Gardeners’ World, you’ll have seen the recent feature on how to trim your garden hedge. Monty Don shared all the best tips for getting your hedges in tip-top condition before the winter, advocating the use of garden steps and garden ladders to get the job done.
Hedge-trimming tips from the experts
The hedge-trimming guide offered a few important points for all gardeners. Monty Don advised that now was the time to cut your hedging. With temperatures beginning to taper off in late summer, it’s an ideal time to sort out all your pruning.
He also advised trimming from the bottom up rather than top down, working in smooth movements. The bottom of the hedge should always be trimmed so that it’s slightly wider than the top, to ensure the sunlight can reach every angle of the hedge. If the hedge is the same width top to bottom, sunlight cannot reach the base of the hedge – resulting in bare stems.
One of the key points in the hedge trimming feature was the use of garden steps and ladders to ensure safety. Monty Don advised against using that wonky stepladder in the shed and investing in a specific garden ladder to trim your hedge.
