EN131: Changing Ladder Standards
23/02/2024
Are you feeling puzzled by EN131 ladder regulations? Scratching your head when it comes to ladder safety standards? Burying your head in the sand when it comes to understanding your responsibilities?
Here at Browns Ladders, you will find everything you need to know.
Key points: There are now only two ladder classifications that you need to be aware of, these are split definitively between domestic ladders and professional ladders.
What is the EN131?
The EN131 is the European Union certification that outlines the requirements and testing methods for ladders. The EN131 was introduced in 2018 and was designed to make it easier to distinguish between ladders intended for industrial use and those fit for domestic use. The introduction of the standards marks a significant shift, aiming to simplify choices for consumers and ensure a higher level of safety across the board.
What were the standards before the EN131 was introduced?
Prior to the 1st of January 2019, when the all-encompassing EN131 standards were introduced, the UK used three different standards for ladder regulation.
These were as follows:
- BS 2037 / BS 1129 Class 1 – Industrial Ladders
- BS EN131 Class 2 – Suitable for Light Trade Use
- BS 2037 / BS 1129 Class 3 – Domestic Ladder
Class 1 ladders were typically reserved for industrial settings like construction sites and similar demanding environments, where the need for a heavy-duty ladder was paramount.
On the other hand, EN131 standards catered to trade and retail contexts, demanding sturdy yet comparatively lighter ladders that could be used on a frequent basis. Finally, Class 3 ladders were designed with the domestic user in mind, perfect for infrequent tasks such as changing a lightbulb or putting up your Christmas decorations.
However, these three standards were overruled with the introduction of the new EN131 standard – which is split simply into two categories:
- EN131 Non-Professional – Domestic Ladders only
- EN131 Professional – Industrial / Workplace ladders
Nowadays, the EN131 Non-Professional ladders are used exclusively for infrequent DIY tasks around the home. Meanwhile, the EN131 Professional ladders are designed and built specifically for industrial, trade and all business purposes.
This change in ladder standards not only means that selecting the right ladder for the job has become more straightforward, but it also ensures that all ladders, whether for home or Professional use, meet rigorous safety and quality benchmarks.
This shift aims to elevate the safety of ladder users by making it easier to choose a ladder that is appropriate for your needs, reducing the risk of accidents due to inappropriate ladder use.
Why the EN131 change?
The revision of the EN131 standard was driven by a desire to enhance safety and adapt to the evolving needs of both domestic and Professional environments. By consolidating the standards, the EN131 now provides a clearer, more unified guideline for ladder manufacturing and use.
This change reflects an understanding that safety should not be compromised, regardless of the ladder’s setting. It acknowledges the reality that even domestic ladder users deserve the same level of safety assurance as professionals.
EN131 Professional Ladders
As mentioned earlier, the EN131 Professional category is designed for both heavy-duty industrial work and everyday trade tasks.
Both Professional and Non-Professional ladders can hold up to 150kg. But, what sets the Professional ladders apart is that they’re put through tests that are five times tougher than those for Non-Professional ones, making sure they’re extra sturdy and safe for the tougher jobs.
It is also worth noting that the EN131 Professional classification is only relevant for portable ladders, whereas trestles will still be covered by the original BS 2037 / BS 1129 Class 1 standard.
EN131 Domestic Ladders
The EN131 domestic category, however, is solely designed for ladders used in domestic environments. The classification is still able to hold a 150kg load, but the ladders are tested less vigorously than those that will withstand heavy, daily industrial use.
What are the benefits of the new EN131 standards?
Here at Browns Ladders, we get lots of questions from clients like yourself who are unsure what the benefits of the EN131 classifications are…
Enhanced safety features
The updated EN131 standard introduces requirements for more robust slip-resistance and stability features, such as wider bases and enhanced durability tests, to ensure ladders are safe and reliable under a broader range of conditions.
Simplified selection process
With the distinction between domestic and professional ladders streamlined into two clear categories, selecting the right ladder is now less confusing, making it easier for you to comply with safety standards.
Greater consumer confidence
Knowing that all ladders, regardless of their classification, meet a high standard of safety and quality gives you peace of mind, whether you’re using a ladder at home or on a construction site.
How can you tell that your ladder is compliant with the EN131 regulations?
Determining whether your ladder meets the EN131 classifications is straightforward if you know what you’re looking for…
First and foremost, we recommend checking for a label or marking that explicitly states the ladder is EN131 compliant. This label should be clearly visible and include the specific classification – either EN131 Professional or EN131 Non-Professional.
Here at Browns Ladders, all of our portable ladders are compliant with the relevant EN131 requirements. A compliant ladder isn’t just about compliance requirements, it’s also about ensuring that you’re safe every time you set foot on your ladder – whether at work or at home.
