Quick DIY jobs you can do to pass the time at home

We’ve mentioned before about the studies that have shown there are certain DIY jobs that Britons don’t trust themselves to do – jobs that they’d generally prefer tradespeople to do rather than risk themselves. If you’ve ever found yourself stuck at home for more than a few days at a time, sooner or later you may well have found your attention turning to DIY. If that applies to you, happily are plenty of tasks you can do to keep yourself occupied – as long as you’ve got the proper ladders and equipment, of course!

Pruning your trees or garden hedges

It’s true, April can be a bit on-off for sunny weather here in the UK, but if the sunshine holds then it’s no wonder that so many people like to spend time in their gardens. If you’re one of them, you may spot a few things that need tending to while you’re out there. It’s worth prioritising the safety matters first – such as overhanging tree branches which look like they’re dipping too low, or even in danger of cracking.

Cleaning gutters

Gutters can sometimes be as troublesome as they are important. Designed to protect the fabric of your building by channelling water away from it, they can often end up clogged up with leaves or debris (although hopefully there’ll be less of that at the moment as we move further into Spring). However, your gutters have to be as clear as you can make them if you want them to perform their primary function, and protect your home in doing so. Here at Browns, we’d generally recommend a extension ladder as the best option for this job if you’ve got one – but if your gutters are low enough, you might be able to manage just fine on a tall garden ladder. Make sure it’s stable enough, though!

Inspecting your shingles

This is another part of your roof that requires regular attention and maintenance. It’s not just a matter of aesthetics – if your roof shingles are damaged, they can all too easily start leaking water into your home. This can lead to rotting wood or cracks in concrete, quite apart from the other hazards it poses (such as electrocution if the water gets too close to an electrical socket. Again, we’d recommend a sturdy roof ladder for this job – don’t take any risks by overreaching on a shorter one!

Taking a look at your windows

Even the best-installed windows can start showing holes or cracks around their frames if left unchecked for too long. This is especially true if you’ve got wooden frames. Humidity can have a serious impact on them throughout winter, which makes Spring the perfect time to give them a quick once-over, and see if they need repairing or replacing entirely. Any holes or cracks will ideally need to be stripped off, or alternatively filled with caulk. Depending on the extensiveness of the damage, you might have to do this on the inside and outside.
